Australia’s Prime Minister Turnbull Directed DTA to Study Blockchain
May 22, 2018

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull directed the Digital Transformation Agency to investigate potential applications of blockchain technology across government. In senate estimates overnight DTA chief digital officer Peter Alexander revealed the exploration of blockchain technology - and subsequent funding in the recent federal budget - had been requested.

Alexander said this had been prompted by “a number of conversations with ministers and officers, and that a number of agencies had commenced looking at blockchain”. The DTA was handed $700,000 in this year’s federal budget to find uses for blockchain technology over the coming year. Alexander said this would involve the agency understanding how blockhain can work and whether there “really is a value proposition for government”.
